Using sealant – to seal or not to seal

With certain applications they are a must, others a choice. Sealing without question will both
enhance your stone and provide longevity. Factors to consider include, obviously the stone type, the
application or use and wear. Porous stone should definitely be sealed prior to being laid to minimise
the risk of damage from the grout, wet areas an impregnating sealer will assist against water
absorption, this will reduce staining and frost damage on external applications. On external stone it
is essential not to use film forming protection but impregnating protection otherwise moisture can
get trapped between the film and the protective layer increasing the risk of frost damage.
For internal limestones there is a good range of products to choose from that will provide a matt,
    satin, or intensified finish.
A small sample or trial will allow you to see how much of the colour you
want to bring out in the stone. All said, using a sealant is a good option for not only protection but
ease of cleaning and prolonging the life of your stone.
